Health Needs and Kindergarten

One of the fears parents often have of sending their children off to kindergarten is the exposure to a public place where the protection of the home is no longer possible. It is true that when your child goes to school with other children, the opportunities for illness and contamination are much more frequent. But the value of being in school with others and the social and educational value mean that we as parents must prepare our children to begin to spend time in a public place and that we do all we can to help them stay healthy and safe each and every day.

Part of preparing your child to stay healthy even in a public venue like kindergarten is to enlist the aid of your child’s pediatrician. She can make sure your kiddo is up to date on shots and that any vulnerabilities are well known. A good check up and getting all necessary shots before school starts will insure your child’s immune system is well equipped to deal with the additional exposure to germs.

But you can also teach your child good hygiene habits at home and engrain them in her lifestyle so they will stick with her even when she is at kindergarten and she doesn’t have you there to protect her. This includes good bathroom habits, an obsession with washing her hands as often as possible, being aware of others who are sniffing and who may not be taking good care of themselves to avoid contamination and using good table habits so the foods your child eats are clean and safe for consumption at lunch.

Good lifestyle habits at home will benefit the child at school as well. This includes a well developed schedule of getting at least eight hours of sleep each day and a regular diet of all the major food groups, particularly fruits and vegetables as these foods will give your child’s body the defenses it will need to ward off illness if there is an exposure to germs. Good dietary habits will be something that is taught as well as enforced at home. You can send your child a lunch to assure that at least she is taking the right kinds of foods. But the best defense is to make sure your child is aware of her own nutritional needs as it pertains to resisting illness so she also eats well when getting food from the cafeteria and stays healthy and regular every day.

You don’t want to send your child to school paranoid or afraid of other people. But some simple rules of how to interact with others in a way that is social but not risky should be part of your training as you raise the child. Just as you know not to eat after someone else using the same utensil, not to eat anything that has been on the floor or not to eat anything that you don’t know the origin of, these are basic health rules that children may not know if they are not taught. So be a conscientious parent and equip your child to avoid hazardous hygienic situations. Even if they are innocent dangers, they are dangers none the less.

The health preparations for kindergarten includes things parents can control at home such as check ups, getting good sleep and nutrition and gong to school healthy and clean. But they also include things you teach your child so she can keep herself safe and healthy even in the middle of a large group of other kids. By giving her these skills from the first day of school going forward, you are doing your job as good parents to assure she is ready for school each and every day from kindergarten all the way through to college graduation.

Healthier Parenting

Believe it or not, you impart a legacy of health to your children that goes well beyond the genes you give them. You also pass along health beliefs and model health-related choices. Here are 5 tips that will set your kids up on a path towards a healthy life.

1. Instill a sense of wonder about the body.

Many adults fear and distrust their bodies. They believe that the body is fragile, and illness is just around the corner. The myth that you will catch a cold if you go outside without a coat persists. Your kids are listening when you look in the mirror and say to no one in particular, “I’m so fat.”

The truth is your body is the most miraculous mechanical system on the planet. Cuts heal without a single thought or action on your part. Your immune system is your own personal homeland security system, protecting you from bacterial and viral terrorists. Yes, illness is part of the human condition. And we have powerful treatments that aid your body’s own ability to heal. However, even with today’s medicine it’s your body’s ability to battle illnesses, such as the common cold that offers concrete evidence of your body’s resiliency.

Comment on your child’s amazing body. “Wow, that cut healed in no time!” or “You have such strong, fast legs” or “Look at what your hands have been able to draw.” Remind your child how great it is to have eyes and kidneys and hearts that work so well.

2. Become a student of the human body with your child.

Your kids will come to you with questions about how their bodies work. It can be uncomfortable for both you and your child when you don’t have the answers. This discomfort can teach children that they should avoid questions about how their bodies work, which may, in part, explain why parents themselves are reluctant to ask doctors embarrassing questions.

Remember, no one has all the answers. That’s why your doctor participates in continuing medical education. Your child can remind you of the joy of discovery. Together you can look for answers. I mentioned to my son that bones make blood and he asked, “What about creatures with exoskeletons?” I said, “What an interesting question. Let’s get on the Internet and see what we can find out.” Have a child-appropriate book about the body available and learn and use anatomically correct words. Maybe you can have a family contest to come up with the coolest medical term.

3. Teach your kids to listen to their bodies.

Often it feels as if adults are rewarded for ignoring or overcoming the signals from their bodies. The “hero” who comes to work with the flu or the mom who ignores her need for food or sleep. Health is maintained when you know the signals that suggest your body is out of balance and respond in a timely manner when your body indicates it needs something.

Help your kids identify when they’re cold or hungry or tired. You can say even to an infant, “You look hot, so I’m taking off the blanket.” Give your child some experience regulating his external environment like taking on and off sweaters. Educate your children that pain is there to keep them safe. Say, “Owies are no fun, but they’re there to keep you from burning yourself on the stove or cutting yourself with a knife. That’s how your body reminds you to be careful.”

4. Model healthy eating habits.

Childhood obesity is a growing problem. Talk with your kids about good food choices and bad ones. Encourage them to ask themselves,”What kind of food is my body hungry for right now?” and “Am I full?” even if there’s still food on the plate. Pay attention to see if your child is a grazer or a 3-squares-a-day kid and set an eating schedule that reflects their style. Decide whether it’s OK to indulge in unhealthy food choices now and then. When I inquired about the nutritional value of my son’s snack of donuts, he said, It’s health food for the soul!

5. Reward health rather than illness.

Some of my best childhood memories come from times when I was sick. In an effort to ease my pain, my mother unwittingly rewarded illness by lavishing attention on me, delivering endless bowls of ice cream and playing games with me. Who wouldn’t want to be sick!

Instead, lavish attention on your kids when they’re well. While you don’t want to punish your kids for being sick, consider which privileges of health should be withdrawn during sick days.

When you instill in your children a sense of pride, wonder and respect for their bodies, you have given them the foundation of health.

Healthier Meals Start At Home

Here’s food for thought: Eating at home benefits consumers in more ways than one. Not only can it be less expensive to prepare food at home, but it can be far healthier to enjoy a wholesome, home-cooked meal.

To begin with, when you prepare the meal you know exactly what’s on everybody’s plate. According to the Alliance for Affordable Services, reviewing the recipe, measuring the ingredients and adapting them to your dietary needs ensures that you consume healthier fare.

Most people like to get their money’s worth out of a restaurant. As a result, many eateries provide more food than your body actually needs. Preparing a meal at home allows you the flexibility to ration appropriate amounts of food-and controlling your food intake promotes weight management and good health.

Another benefit to preparing a home-cooked meal is the time shared with family and friends. Your home is an intimate setting where you can enjoy the company of others while giving them more of your attention.

The Alliance for Affordable Services is dedicated to helping members live better and save more. The association uses its group buying power to attack soaring health care costs through wellness programs, information, legislative advocacy and incentives to control medical costs.

Faster Grocery Shopping

An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but so can other fruits and vegetables, whole grains and certain antioxidants. So which foods should you add to your shopping list? Doctors say answering that question could be key to protecting your heart health.

Heart disease is the number one killer in the U.S., with up to 2,500 Americans dying from the condition each day. Doctors say people can control their risk of heart disease by exercising regularly, getting regular checkups and eating a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol. That’s where the right shopping list comes in.

To help people select heart-healthy groceries, the American Heart Association now has an online grocery list builder. The free, innovative tool helps people save time by making it easier for them to select products certified to be low in saturated fat and cholesterol and conveniently identified by the American Heart Association’s red-and-white heart-check mark.

You can access the easy-to-use tool at heartcheckmark.org. Once there, click on “Create your list today,” then browse through the more than 850 products and click “Add to list.” A box called “Your Grocery List” shows your list of foods. When you’re done, just print the list and take it with you when you go shopping.

You can select items by product manufacturer or these categories:

• Beverages

• Breads

• Breakfast foods

• Canned soup

• Dairy case

• Deli meats

• Desserts

• Frozen foods

• Fruits and vegetables

• Meat and poultry

• Pasta, sauces and grains

• Seafood

• Snacks

A separate category, called “My Items,” allows you to add other household items, such as spices or bottled water, to your list.

“With all the messages in grocery stores, consumers are bombarded with information,” said Penny Kris-Etherton, R.D., Ph.D., professor of nutrition at Pennsylvania State University. “The simple heart-check mark from the American Heart Association makes it easy for them to cut through the clutter and reliably find the nutritious foods they’re looking for.” The online tool, she added, makes healthy shopping even faster.

Healthful Dining At Your Desk

Many of us eat more food at work than we do at home simply because working hours span mealtimes and snack times. We grab breakfast foods from home or pick up something to eat at our desk. Lunch comes from a brown bag, the cafeteria or a restaurant. For some, snacking helps break up the afternoon and boosts energy levels for the rest of the workday.

Breakfast at your desk should be convenient, tasty, nutritious and mess-free. A quick rule: Include whole grains, dairy and a fruit. One option is yogurt (dairy) topped with Whole Grain Total® (whole grain) and diced peaches (fruit). A muffin made with whole grain cereal, along with milk and a banana, is also satisfying and easy to eat.

Packing lunch takes little time and allows you to choose what you want to eat. “Peel and wash vegetables, rinse and spin lettuce, slice cheese and fill water bottles on Sunday for the entire week,” says Dayle Hayes, R.D., a nutrition consultant and author in Billings, Mont. “Wrap single servings of luncheon meats in plastic wrap, label and freeze. In the morning, use the frozen meat for a sandwich. It should be defrosted by lunchtime.” Hayes also suggests preparing a couple extra servings when you’re making dinner so that you have lunch leftovers.

Food safety is essential to prevent spoilage. Pack breakfast and lunch with cold packs if a refrigerator is not available. Heat chili, soup and other hot foods until very hot; then pack in a clean, insulated container warmed with boiling water. Open only when ready to eat.

Snacks may be the most difficult, and resisting the lure of office goodies can be a challenge. Hayes recommends stocking your desk with nutritious, nonperishable snacks. If you have been told to eat less sodium to help control your blood pressure, limit snack foods that are overly salty. Area grocery or health food stores may offer more lower-sodium choices.

Healthful Cooking

When preparing your next health-conscious menu, consider this fact: Nutritionists say that knowing where your ingredients come from can be almost as important as knowing what ingredients to use.

That’s one reason food such as certified Wild American Shrimp has become popular. They are caught fresh in their own natural environment from the South Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico-and they are a health-conscious choice for consumers. A typical 4-ounce portion has just 112 calories when served steamed, boiled, grilled or baked and provides 23 grams of protein-47 percent of the daily value for protein.

Monica Pope, owner and chef of the Houston restaurant T’afia, has built an entire menu around fresh, regional fare. She recommends that consumers ask for certified Wild American Shrimp and purchase local ingredients at their grocery store, favorite restaurant or seafood counter. Not all shrimp are created equal-wild-caught shrimp has a distinctive flavor. Most shrimp sold in American stores are pond-raised imported, so be sure to ask for Wild American Shrimp caught by fishermen.

“You’re not only choosing the best-tasting seafood possible, you’re also helping to support an entire industry and way of life,” says Pope. Try these recipes:

Turmeric Shrimp With

Hip Hummous

Turmeric Shrimp

1 lb Wild American Shrimp, cleaned

21/2 cloves garlic

2/3 teaspoon salt

1 small bay leaf

1/3 tablespoon fresh-squeezed lime juice

21/2 cups water

2/3 teaspoon turmeric

3 tablespoons lime juice

pinch turmeric

1/3 tablespoon red chili powder

3 tablespoons cilantro, chopped

Place the peeled garlic cloves in a food processor with the salt and mince. Toss with the shrimp and set aside for 15 minutes. In a saucepan, bring the water to a boil with the bay leaf, 1/3 tablespoon lime juice and the 2/3 teaspoon turmeric. When the water is boiling, add the shrimp, stirring, and cook just until opaque, about 2-3 minutes at most. Do not overcook! Drain.

Immediately spread the shrimp onto a large baking sheet to cool, as they will continue to cook. Mix the additional lime juice, red chili powder and additional turmeric together and pour over the warm shrimp. Toss until well-combined. Add the chopped cilantro leaves to the cooled shrimp.

Hip Hummous

1/2 bag chickpeas

11/2 bulbs roasted garlic

1/8 cup fresh-squeezed lemon juice

cup tahini

1 preserved lemon

2 avocados, ripe, remove pits & scoop out flesh

1 tablespoon curry powder

salt & pepper to taste

Place chickpeas in salted boiling water and cook until soft, about one hour. Drain in a colander and then puree in a food processor with the rest of the ingredients. Taste for seasoning.

NOTE: To make your own quickly preserved lemons: Lightly score 4 lemons all the way around (do not cut through to the flesh) and then boil in 1 cup water, 1 cup fresh lemon juice, 2 bay leaves, 1/2 tablespoon whole black peppercorns and 1/4 cup kosher salt until lemons are soft, approx. 30 minutes.

To assemble:

Mound the Hip Hummous in the middle of the plate and surround with the Turmeric Shrimp.

Healthful Benefits of Using Adjustable Beds

Adjustable beds are often times found in hospitals and nursing homes because of the medical benefits it offers. These beds provide comfort to people who are bed ridden or to those who have to stay in bed for long periods of time. These beds are most ideal for people who have undergone surgery as getting in and out of bed would be easy. They can be operated electronically, an elderly, invalid or handicapped user will be able to move without the immediate assistance of an attendant.

An adjustable bed however, is not just for those people with medical conditions only. It can also provide a comfortable and stress-free sleep. This is necessary for the over-all health of a person. A good night’s sleep provides the body with much needed rest. Likewise, sleep is most important in the repair of body cell and tissue.

So many people are using uncomfortable beds which could be the cause of many aches and pains in the morning. As we spend one third of our lives sleeping, we must ensure that our bed would be comfortable enough. The adjustable bed is an option that should be considered if we want to avoid sleepless nights that can develop into health conditions that could impair our well being.

One benefit of adjustable beds is improved blood circulation. The bed can be adjusted to allow blood circulation to flow continuously throughout the body. The flat and hard surface of ordinary beds would cause pressure points on all parts of the body. Numbness of arms and legs as well as a feeling of sluggishness will be experienced as a result of poor or decreased blood circulation. By slightly elevating the legs and upper body, a more natural sleeping position will be achieved and proper blood circulation will be ensured thus creating less pressure on the heart.
Sleeping with the chest slightly elevated would ease pressure on the lungs and allow it to function more effortlessly. People suffering from asthma and other breathing difficulties would pile up pillows to breathe more easily. Doctors would often recommend an adjustable bed so that the chest and the head will be elevated so the patient will be more comfortable and breathe with ease.

Adjustable beds have greatly improved through the years. You can now find adjustable beds with heat and massage units. These added options would naturally mean bigger investment but try to look at it this way. An adjustable bed would ensure that you have a good and restful sleep- all this is due to the ability of the bed to adapt to whatever height, angle and even temperature that the user will find to his liking.

HEALTH FOOD STORE

In the last twenty-some years, we’ve all started to pay more attention to our health. We’ve come to realize that what we eat and some poor lifestyle habits, play a significant role in many conditions, such as obesity, diabetes, cancer and heart disease. The incidence of such diseases is on the rise, far more prevalent than they were 100 years ago, when medicine was far less advanced.

These facts have sparked a renewed interest in healthy dietary habits as an alternative way to avoid disease. We hear about genetically engineered foods, food additives and trans-fatty acids. We can’t help but wonder what might be lurking in our grocery carts. Improving our health through diet can add years to our lives. For all of these reasons, the modern health food store is worthy of a visit.

If you’ve never shopped at a health food store, it’s a new and fun experience. You’ll find the produce section contains only organically-grown fruits and vegetables. Such produce comes from farms which must be federally certified and inspected to assure no pesticides are used on the crops and that pesticides have not been used on the land for the last ten years. Pesticides remain on the crops after harvesting, which is why we are told to wash all fruits and vegetables throughly. Ask a clerk in the health food store to explain why organically-grown produce is better for you. The conversation will be an eye-opener.

Most health food stores have a butcher’s market. All meat sold at a health food store must meet a high standard of purity. The animals are not fed antibiotics, there are no additives or injected salt solutions in the meat and the animals are raised in a natural environment instead of small, restricted pens. This is usually referred to as “free range”. You will be able to taste the difference in this meat when compared to the usual grocery store meats. The texture and taste are superior and worth the price.

The health food store boasts all the dairy products, grains and canned goods you’ll find at the chain groceries. The difference? All of these products are produced naturally, without pesticides or additives.

Although shopping at the health food store is a bit more expensive, the food is far more nutritious and the taste is superior. This is especially true of meats and produce.

If you’re put off by price concerns, buy just enough for one dinner and taste the difference. Make friends with the health food store clerks. Ask them questions and voice your concerns. They know their business and are delighted to share their knowledge with you.

Over time, you’ll find that food purchased at the health food store can work wonders for the overall health of everyone in your family. With food that’s truly good for you, you’re better equiped to fight off a cold, bring vibrancy to your complexion and add years to your life!

Health Food

Every dieter wanders around aimlessly looking for healthy food when they really don’t know what they are looking for. It’s not because dieters are stupid, it is because there is so much mixed information out there. Even the people who make the foods we buy in the store seem to be confused. What makes something healthy anyway? Is it the amount of calories or the amount of fats? Actually, though these things are important, they are only part of the equation.

This is why so many diets may fail. People don’t know what to look for and they often end up buying the wrong foods. They then get discouraged when they can’t lose anything and they give up. The problem is that they don’t know what healthy food is, and they don’t know what to look for. Advertisers often call something a healthy food when they honestly have no right to do so. There are many foods that are advertised as healthy that don’t fit the bill. You really have to do your own work to decide if you want to eat something or not. If you skip this step, you are probably going to fail on your quest to lose weight.

The obvious healthy food is the one that is grown. That means fruits and vegetables are almost always healthy, as long as you aren’t adding anything to them. If you top a cup of peas with two tablespoons of butter, you have just turned a healthy food into something you probably shouldn’t be eating. Many people mistakenly turn good foods into something they shouldn’t be touching with a ten-foot pole when on a diet. You want to make sure you are not adding fats and sugars to foods that are otherwise considered good for you.

If you want a healthy food you should look for a natural food. This means you need to get things that are not processed and have no additives. If something is described as a number on an ingredient list, skip it. If it is not a natural food your body doesn’t know what to do with it. One healthy food is bread, as long as it is made from unrefined whole grains, and the only preservative you find included is vinegar. When you are looking for healthy food, skip the hype and zero in on the ingredients. That is where the truth of the matter lies.

Health Fitness Articles

I have always been the kind of person to study something in depth before getting my feet wet. A lot of people call me obsessional, but I don’t see it that way. For me, it is all about getting all the information I need to so I can make the right decisions. That is why, when I decided to get in shape, I read all the health fitness articles that I could before I took my first step on the tread mill. By reading fitness and health articles until I felt like I was an expert, I was able to design the optimum workout for my needs.

Health fitness articles are one of the most popular reading subjects nowadays. Our culture is kind of a paradox if you think about it. On the one hand, we have bigger problems with obesity than ever before. On the other hand, more and more people are obsessed with staying healthy and fit. I guess it makes sense if you look at it right. In a culture where people have healthy eating habits and exercise regularly, health fitness articles are less important. In a culture were people don’t know anything about staying in shape, however, articles on staying healthy are a godsend.

As I said before, I read a lot of health fitness articles, but not all of them stuck. I was surprised because the ones that made the most impact were the ones with the most general and common sense rules. For example, my favorite health fitness article was about exercising. It said that the biggest mistake that people make is to find overambitious exercise routines based on someone else’s idea of the perfect exercises. It advised me to come up with a routine that involve activities that I actually enjoyed instead of activities that I thought would develop the most muscle mass or cardiovascular strength. Knowing this, I was able to incorporate bicycle riding and swimming – two activities that I absolutely love – into a good workout.

I also read a health fitness article that told me the relationship between eating habits and exercising. This is really important for me because I also had bad eating habits in addition to being too sedentary. They tell me that eating the right foods would give me the energy that I would need to work out and stay active. Wouldn’t you know it – once I started changing my diet, I did have more impetus to get out and start running around.

Do You Need to Lose Weight

Are you a woman? If you are and if you are like many other women, there is a good chance that you are concerned with your appearance. When it comes to appearance, there are many women who are concerned with their weight, namely the weight that they would like to shed or need to shed. Unfortunately, many women believe that they need to lose weight when they really don’t. To determine if you should seriously think about losing weight, as it is an important issue, you may want to continue reading on.

When it comes to determining if you should lose weight, there are a number of important factors that you should consider. Since many women are concerned with their appearance and the way that they look, you may want to examine your appearance. Do you think that could benefit from a weight loss? If you are currently unhappy with the way that you look, it may be something to consider. Of course, it is also important to make sure that you don’t lose too much weight, as it can be harmful to your health. For that reason, you may want to consult with your doctor to determine if weight loss is an issue that you should work on.

Speaking of consulting with your doctor, your doctor may have recommended that you lose weight, with their own fee will. If your doctor has suggested that you lose weight, it is advised that you take his or her suggestion into consideration. What many women fail to realize is that their healthcare professional isn’t as concerned with their appearance as they are their health. So, if your doctor recommends that you lose weight, even just a little bit of weight, he or she may be concerned with your health and the possibility of you developing any weight related health complications.

The two above mentioned signs are two the most common signs that you may want to think about losing weight. Of course, it is important to remember that the decision to lose weight is yours to make, as it is an issue that you have to deal with. With that in mind, it is important to also remember that carrying around excess weight is more than just carrying around excess weight. There are many women who are constantly stressed out about or concerned with their appearance. If you would no longer like to spend every day in front of the mirror ashamed of your body or hiding your body from those and you know and love, it may be time to take action.

If you would like to lose weight, you may be pleased to know that you have a number of different options. Many women are able to develop their own weight loss plans, which often include a regular exercise plan, as well as eating healthy. You also have the option of joining a local weight loss program or an online weight loss program. These types of programs are nice, as you often get professional advice as well as support from group leaders and other weight loss program members.

As a reminder, it is advised that you take the time to speak with your physician, regarding your weight loss plans or goals. This is especially important if you plan on creating your own at-home weight loss plan. In addition to giving you the go-ahead, your physician may also offer you a few weight loss tips, tricks, and techniques, ones that you may find helpful.

about health care

When most people think about health care, they picture doctors and nurses. In reality, however, there is much more to health care services than this. Health care schools all over the country train people in a wide variety of skills. From physicians and nurses to health care administrators, healthcare careers have room for just about anyone. And although there are job opportunities for a doctors, you do not have to be a doctor to be in demand.

I knew none of this until a few years ago. I had worked as an administrator in a mid-level company for many years. It was an alright job, but there was very little opportunity for advancement. When the company finally went bankrupt, I had mixed feelings. I was scared about not knowing what I was going to do to make a living, but I was excited to be finally getting out of that job.

After several months on unemployment, however, things were looking bleak. After seeing an ad on daytime TV, I decided to check out a health care school. Although I was skeptical of the ads claims, the idea that health care schools can get me working in the medical fields within six months was quite appealing. As it turns out, it was true. Almost as soon as I enrolled in health care schools, the job calls started coming.

Many people do not think of the health insurance companies as part of health care, but in reality they are one of the most important parts. Going to health care schools actually trained me to be a health care manager. If medicine is about doctors and nurses, it is just as much about healthcare managers. We use the skills we learned in health care schools to make important decisions about coverage. The doctors submit forms to us, and we decide whether the patients need a particular treatment. Without health care schools, we would not have the necessary know how.

I had never dreamed about getting involved in the field of medicine, but going to health care schools one of the best decisions I ever made. You see, the company I work for is huge. There is ample opportunity for advancement, and I never have a dull day. Although there is a lot of paperwork, I am used to this as a manager. And as an added bonus, the health care schools I went to provided me the opportunity to make many contacts in the field. When my kids get sick, you can bet that I get them right into the doctor with no waiting.

Healthcare Recruiting

Establishing healthcare agencies needs you to look for beneficial factor that could contribute for the success of your business.

? Open Competition.
Nursing shortage is an advantage reason why healthcare agencies instituted. As the demand for nurses are growing the supply must also be escalated that is why there are numerous healthcare agencies recruiting good nursing employee at the same time increasing job employment.
With the command of a competent and consistent recruiter, a promoting strategy can draw away poorly treated high-caliber talent from local competitors. One reason why there is a tight competition is to admit that is not ethics but rather the extreme campaign for talent. Competition for talent is visibly arises. Focus on active candidates rather than employed with top-performing passive candidates.
Healthcare agencies look for the factor of open competition whereas they utilize various strategies to hire and recruit. Employee referral program is one weapon of choice with tight supervision of a managed employer brand. Healthcare agencies apply the number-one recruiting approach that is to make an effective local advertisement.

? Best Management Practice
Benchmark the very best retention programs, both within and outside of healthcare, and then develop your own. It should identify the designated person who is at risk of leaving and develop a program to rapidly share internal best practices in the area of retention
Healthcare agencies must build their name as a good place to work with the image of excellence. You can conduct a research of best management practices for people programs and create utilization of the acquired paramount management program to spread the word in local and industry publications. In addition, it is essential to get on both local and national best-place-to-work lists to further enhance your image.
Some healthcare agencies management uses metrics for gauging excellent performance. With the extensive use of metrics recruiting and retention program is possible. Integrate great metrics into everything you do in talent management. With strategic metrics you can identify what works and what does not work.
Develop management practice resolving unqualified employees. Remember that bad employee creates bad performance. You should develop a bad manager identification program and then either fix or replace poor managers before they drive double-digit turnover. In addition, tie their pay to their performance as managers.
You should not quantify the impacts of bad management. Managers at all levels fail to pay attention to recruiting and retention primarily because they underestimate the financial damage that lacking performance in these two areas can cause.

? Eliminate or Even Cast Out Weak Strategic Recruiting Plans.
Less than half of the healthcares recruiting departments have a recruiting plan that is actually used to make resource allocations in recruiting. There must be a clear outlined strategy for a recruiting department to be successful. Coherent implementation of the strategy will aware the recruiting department to allocate time and budget to attain the corporate goals.

Healthcare Providers

I think this is a good time for a checkup, or physical as it is termed in the healthcare industry. I mean this is a good time to check the health of your site or setting. As healthcare providers, we are dedicated to curing our patients of their ills and keeping them healthy. My question is, “Do you have the same attitude about the place you work?” Is your site meeting its highest goals? If not, then it is time for a change.

I think that as a group healthcare sites are a lot like our patients. Some patients don’t work hard at keeping healthy. In fact, many engage in behavior that is very detrimental to their well-being. You probably can easily image such a person. Maybe they are very overweight. Well, there are many healthcare facilities that are like that. They have many processes in which there are steps which add no value, that are a complete waste of time and effort. Then, there are patients who do a lot of the right things. They eat correctly, get a good amount of exercise, and generally have a positive outlook. There are a few healthcare facilities that are fit too.

What does a healthcare site in not so good shape look like? These sites, I believe, have as their goals just to meet their compliance standards, those set by the state, JHACO, or the FDA or some other body. As long as they are being accredited, they are satisfied. Their attitude may be, “If it isn’t broken, don’t change it.” They are like patients who are content to just sit on the couch, watch TV, and eat whatever they like as long as they don’t feel poorly.

What does a healthcare site in good shape look like? I believe that such sites are continually looking for ways to better themselves. They engage in “continuous quality improvement” activities. They are really concerned about the health and attitudes of their patients and clients. They use surveys and they question and listen. Some even use a tool called quality function deployment when designing new facilities or programs.

Besides listening to patients, they pay close attention to their employees. They actively seek ideas from the employees on how things could be done better. They want to have their employees enjoy working at their site and support its mission. The leaders of such sites actively reflect this attitude.

Further, such sites seek ways to improve the processes at their site. They cut waste and save time and improve the bottom line. Many tools for doing this can be found in quality disciplines such as Lean Healthcare and Six Sigma. You can find a very good white paper on Lean Healthcare at the http://www.IHI.org website.

What are the results of these positive and active approaches? Our patients are happier, fitter, and find time to do the things they want. They generally live longer with fewer health problems. Healthcare sites which are actively engaged in continuous quality improvement programs generally find that they have the time to accomplish their objectives and don’t feel rushed, they have an improved bottom line, and they rarely experience adverse events. The doctors don’t have to work impossible hours to accomplish all they want. They work as a team.

Let me encourage you at this time to sit down with your colleagues and leaders and assess the health of your site. If you find that you fall short of what you should be, I hope that you put in the effort to reach the best goals. After all, we expect the same from our patients, don’t we?

Healthcare Jobs Are Growing Fastest

With an aging population and new innovations in medical diagnosis and treatment, healthcare jobs are growing faster than in any other field. An aging population needs more health services while healthcare innovations increase the use of medications and the demand for treatment facilities.

Even though healthcare provides job opportunities both to health services professionals and others such as accountants, personnel officers, buyers, computer programmers and food service personnel, the emphasis in this article is on health services professionals.

Health Services Professionals

Health services require both professionals with advanced training and technicians with different kinds of operational skills. We look at the range of healthcare jobs in this market. This is more an indicative list rather than an exhaustive one.

  • Physicians, dentists, chiropractors, optometrists and veterinarians are professionals who require varying levels of training
  • Technologists and technicians in clinical laboratory, EEG, EKG, nuclear medicine, radiology and surgical work
  • Health technicians like dental hygienists, dispensing opticians and emergency medicine technicians
  • Dieticians and nutritionists, occupational, physical, recreational and respiratory therapists and speech pathologists
  • Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians
  • Registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, nursing aides and psychiatric aides
  • Home care nurse, health aides, medical assistants and social workers
  • Medical billing specialist, coding specialist, patient account representative and insurance claims/reimbursement specialists
  • Medical records technicians
  • Medical transcriptionists

As would be immediately evident, the field is quite extensive, and could extend further with new innovations in diagnosis and treatment.

Healthcare Jobs Information Resources

Each of the healthcare jobs requires specialized training, certification and licensing. Being a matter of life and death, unlicensed practitioners are not allowed to work in healthcare fields. Licenses are granted by different states in the USA, and each state has its own licensing regulations.

There are many sources for information on healthcare jobs.

The US Department of Labor publishes projected demands for different kinds of labor. Similar projections might be published by the healthcare industry also. These projections can help you select a healthcare job that is in line with your inclinations and also promises a growing demand.

Then there are numerous career centers, on the ground and on the Web, which will provide you information about each job. You can get information on:

  • What the job involves. A description of the work that the job involves.
  • Qualifications needed to be hired, and details of education and training needed to acquire the qualifications
  • Training institutions and admissions procedure
  • The formalities regarding certifications and licensing, such as the need for internship
  • Career progression paths indicating the potential for growth in job satisfaction and earnings
  • Current earnings levels in each healthcare job
  • Associations of healthcare professionals and technicians

These career centers also interview persons engaged in each occupation and publish the interview details. These published interviews portray life in each profession, the kind of satisfaction it can provide, and give you a more realistic picture of what to expect if you choose it.

Healthcare in Spain

Becoming ill in a foreign country is a concern for everyone, especially if you cannot understand the health system or speak the language. Although, we generally take good health for granted, we need to be prepared for any unexpected health related eventuality.

Anyone who has had the misfortune of falling seriously ill in Spain will agree that medical facilities in Spain are of a very high standard. Clinics and hospitals are very clean and Spanish doctors tend to be very thorough.

Of course, the availability of services does vary from locality to locality and you may need to travel to a neighbouring town or city for treatment.

In an emergency look for the urgencias (emergency) section of the nearest hospital. Before you have established yourself, for less urgent problems, it would be advisable to go to a private clinic to avoid a long wait.

For tourists and non-residents, form EHIC (European Health Insurance Cover) has replaced the old E111. The form E111 is no longer valid. You can apply online at www.dh.gov.uk/travellers. Have a photocopy of your EHIC ready to show the doctor the original and hand in the copy. You will find lots of information on health for travellers on the site mentioned above.

Farmacias (Chemists) in Spain are also excellent as a first port of call as they are very informative and you can usually buy a lot more over the counter than you can in the UK Many people relocating to Spain are on a budget until they establish themselves. For them, the big question on their mind is:

Am I Entitled to Free Health Care?

Spain’s public health service is known as the Instituto Nacional de la Salud (INSALUD). If you make Spanish social security contributions via your employment or your business you and your family are entitled to the same free health care as a Spanish National. Once you register to pay Social Security, you will become a member of INSALUD. You will be provided with a social security card (tarjeta) and be assigned a doctor.

If you are an EU National and have made contributions to your home Social Security scheme for two years prior to your arrival in Spain, you may be entitled to public health cover in Spain for a limited period dating from your last payment at home. In order to qualify for this, you need to take Form E-106 (pick this up at your local Social Security branch) to the local provincial office of the Instituto Nacional de la Seguridad Social.

Pensioners and those on incapacity benefit should do as above but with form E-121.

The Flying Doctors – Helicopteros Sanitarios

Helicopteros Sanitarios is an invaluable service for those with a home on the Costa del Sol. It is a 24 hour call out service available to members only. Seniors and parents of young children really appreciate the service, with its team of fully trained doctors that efficiently perform house calls after your quick phone call to their Puerto Banus centre.

Helicopteros Sanitarios is excellent value for money and there are different schemes available. Cover for an entire family of four is around 250 Euros per annum with an unlimited number of callouts. For membership details call (+34) 952 897 347. I should point out that despite their name; they generally turn up in an ambulance as opposed to an aircraft!

Private Health Care

Bupa’s Spanish division Sanitas offers the highest quality of health care options. They even have a unique health plan for expatriates living in Spain.

From as little as 27 Euros per month for the classic plan and 48 Euros for the complete plan you can have the peace of mind that should you need medical assistance, you will receive the best of care.

Those of you who have visited the Costa del Sol recently will have noticed the impressive new hospital building ‘Hospiten’ whilst driving along the N-340 in Estepona. All members of Sanitas can receive medical treatment in this spanking new, modern hospital.

Healthcare In Canada

Healthcare in Canada is a vital subject for anyone moving to or residing in Canada. The Federal Government does provide some funding from the taxpayer for the health system, however, each Province is individually responsible for its own Healthcare system.

There is a basic free system (Alberta, BC and Ontario charge the residents a healthcare tax or premium to pay for this!) that every legal resident and citizen of Canada is entitled to which includes access to a family doctor and most hospital treatment (definitely emergency care). This is governed by the Canada Health Act (1984) which lays down the basic entitlements of free coverage. Prescription drugs and supplies are provided in the hospitals in most cases as long as you remain an in patient.

The costs start to mount up for prescription drugs and medical supplies when you are not in hospital. Drugs are bought from the pharmacy at the standard cost which for specialist drugs can run into hundreds of dollars for one course of treatment. Other medical services will probably not be covered such as Physiotherapy, chiropractic treatment and massage therapy. Custom made medical supplies such as knee braces or orthotics can cost over a thousand dollars to purchase in some instances.

The amount of coverage and standard of Healthcare in Canada is described in detail on the main Government site but does vary between Provinces however.

Each Province also has its own regulations for the practitioner’s qualifications and even nurses will have to recertify if they move between Provinces. This does cause confusion to new migrants to Canada as most foreign qualifications just may not be enough and will most likely result in some level of retraining. Dental treatment is normally NOT included in the healthcare system and you will have to pay for treatment.

Many Canadian employers offer fairly comprehensive benefits packages that include coverage for Prescription drugs and other services such as physiotherapy and chiropractic treatment though this is most often only up to 80% of the cost. As each Province has different rules for qualifying times to gain access for the free service ensure you thoroughly research your Province of choice via the links above.

If your employment doesn’t come with coverage or you wish to improve it you will need to take out a private policy

If you require short term coverage for when you first arrive in Canada, make sure you have a proper policy (travel insurance may not be sufficient) and CHECK you are covered.

Healthcare Help For Entrepreneurs

If you are in business for yourself, you have probably already discovered that individual health insurance is extremely cost-prohibitive. You may think paying outrageous fees is your only option. Or even that you can’t afford health coverage at all.

What Are Health Savings Accounts?

A Health Savings Account (HSA) is an insurance policy that was actually designed with the self-employed and the small business owner in mind. According to Mark Baker, HSA specialist for Golden Rule Insurance Company, “an HSA is a higher deductible health insurance plan that is coupled with a tax advantage savings account.”

The difference between purchasing individual healthcare and investing in an HSA is similar to the difference between renting a home and buying one. If you rent, each month you write out a check to help your landlord pay off the home you are living in (and you don’t even like him!). If you buy, you incur a higher cost up front with the deposit. But with every payment, you build equity.

The Bad and Good:

• You start with a high deductible. Not an attractive feature but it gets better.

• Your high deductible results in significantly lower premiums.

• The money you save, you can keep tax-free in your HSA. When you encounter any kind of medical expense, you can use that tax-free money towards your deductible.

How it works:

Let’s say you’re in a car wreck and wind up getting saddled with tens of thousands of dollars in medical expenses. Even though your deductible with an HSA is high, say three thousand dollars, the money you’ve saved (tax free) in your HSA will likely cover it.

When your deductible is met, your insurance takes over payments for its percentage of all your covered expenses. Every plan is different, but the most common scenario is that once your deductible is paid, you are covered for the remainder of the year.

You can even use the pre-tax money in your account towards dental and vision expenses. Or out-of-pocket costs, like filling prescriptions.

And as long as you have a Health Savings Account, that money remains tax-deferred in your account for any medical expenses you encounter. If you find at the end of the year you have not spent what’s there, don’t worry—it rolls over. In fact, it can just sit there and earn interest until you do need it. According to Mr. Baker, his company is now paying a 4% interest rate on their clients’ HSAs. If you spent that same money on the premiums of a plan with a lower deductible; that would just be money down the drain.

Healthcare for Long term Patients

Is this Insurance Right for You?

Long-term care insurance is not right for everyone. For a small percentage of the population this coverage is an affordable and worthwhile type of insurance. Determining whether or not long-term care insurance is right for you won’t be the only task at hand; looking for scams will also be a concern.

As you get older, the need for assistance in your everyday life increases. Whether it is in-home care or residing in a nursing home for a few months you will most likely need some way to pay for these types of services. In order to maintain long-term care insurance you must pay for them each and every year until death. Many policies are canceled by policyholders that are on fixed incomes and are simply unable to pay for the increasing premiums as they get older. If the only funds you are receiving were those from Social Security or SSI, then it would be wise to not purchase a policy. Also, if you find that every day purchases and paying for utilities makes you stretch your budget to the limit, you probably should stay clear of this policy. This type of policy is only right for someone who has significant assets they want to preserve for their family, remain independent, or just to spare their family the expense of a nursing home bill.

Comparing policies can prove to be difficult because every company is selling a different combination of benefits and coverage. Many companies offer to pay a fixed amount for each day you receive care, while others will cover a percentage of the overall cost of care or supply a specified amount. Beware of these types of policies unless they offer inflation protection. You see, if they do not account for the increasing cost of nursing home costs, then you are stuck with a policy that really does you no good.

Just like a standard healthcare plan, you will have to receive services at designated locations. If you go outside of this network they will simply refuse to pay for any care that you receive. If you have any type of mental disease or nervous disorder then don’t expect many carriers to accept you (the one exception is Alzheimer’s). There are more restrictions in this type of insurance than any other health insurance.

If this type of policy is right for you, please make sure that the company is reputable. There are many individuals who thrive on the fact that not many people will make an informed decision when it comes to purchasing long-term health insurance. Be sure to read the fine print and find out everything you can about the policy before committing to a company and a long-term health insurance plan.

health articles

It seems that our medical professionals cannot agree on anything. For every medical opinion that is given, you will be able to find a doctor that will give an opposite opinion. This can be very frustrating if you are trying to find a diagnosis. This can also be very frustrating if you have to change doctors due to insurance and find that they feel you were given miss information by your previous physician.

I recently went through a situation where I was looking for answers for the severe back pain I was in. I had been to general practitioners, as well as a group of specialists. My appointments included three different cities and five different doctor’s offices. I know ever inch of five different waiting rooms. As I spent time waiting for test results and appointments I read many health articles in the magazines in the waiting rooms. I was beginning to see a pattern in the health articles. If one health magazine had a topic that was featured another magazine would have a similar topic and or rebuttal article the next month. The doctors that write the health articles seem to enjoy proving each other wrong. At times it seems that their main objective is to disagree. This makes me suspicious of health articles. I start to wonder how much of the article is fact and how much is the opinion of the doctor.

As with all research, health articles can present statistics in such a way that they can claim a theory is proven or they can claim the opposite. I was talking to my nephew about this. He is a pharmaceutical researcher. He agreed that the health articles can be very misleading, especially if they are based on research that has not been verified. He explained that there are so many articles written because a researcher needs to have a certain number of publications each year to fulfill requirements for grants, fellowships and scholarships. Often times the researcher does not have the time to do an in depth article, so they read another person’s published work and create a rebuttal article. He pointed out that this is why you do not see many of the health magazines any place but in the doctor’s office. The health articles are not very interesting, factual or well written. He did tell me that the health articles that are written in more popular magazines are usually well researched and written better because they are written by professional writers rather than researchers.

issue of health and safety

When it comes to our work environments, many employees tend to let things slide. However, it’s important to know that as an employee of a specific company, whether you’re part-time or full-time, you do possess certain civil rights. Take the major issue of health and safety at work for instance. This is a subject that everyone who works should get involved with. The fact is that the more you know about health and safety in the workplace, the better off you’ll be. Take a moment to ponder the safety measures and precautions you already know that your workplace incorporates. Are they up to par with reality, or is some investigating and rearranging called for?

Were you aware that it’s your right as an employee of any company to be safe in your work environment? Naturally this means that certain measures should be employed for your security. This is most likely up to the employer, but it’s also up to you to be leery and aware of what’s going on. The sad reality is that thousands of workers are injured every year in the workplace. Many of these employees are even killed because proper safety measures were not employed. This is where trade unions often play a part. All workers have the right to join a trade union if they desire. This is a wonderful way to help protect yourself as an employee of a major company.

Some things you can do to assist with health and safety at work are to watch out for fellow employees and supervisors. They should also make an effort to do the same for you. Secondly, it’s always prudent to make not of any safety hazards present in your work environment. If you happen to come across some major flaws in the workplace, then it’s time to notify a supervisor, who can proceed with changes from there on out. Probably the worst thing you can do is say absolutely nothing. It’s crucial to have a voice concerning health and safety at work. This is the most effective way for workers to stay safe. Remember to take full advantage of additional sources that offer statistics and laws regarding health and safety at work. This knowledge could in fact save your life or the life of a fellow employee.

Health And Safety

Health and safety are a primary concern in almost any work place. Although workplace safety procedures vary from place to place, there are certain universal health and safety guidelines that you should follow. I have been a health safety compliance expert for years, and have studied this in detail. The thing that matters most isn’t whether this or that rule is in place, but whether there is a culture of safety in the workplace. If safety and health guidelines are respected and put above everything else, people won’t get hurt. If, on the other hand, people take a lax attitude towards environmental safety, accidents will happen – sometimes with tragic results.

The most important thing is to keep health safety guidelines in the forefront of company concerns. This means that you don’t only deal with health and safety issues once a year when you are getting accreditation reviews by the government. You have to deal with it all the time. If you have a large enough company to afford it, you should appoint a workplace safety expert. If you don’t, you can add it on as a peripheral to someone’s job description. Take one of your other workers who wants to make some extra money and offer to appoint him safety and health compliance chair in exchange for a bonus. Many workers will jump at the chance.

Make sure that every month or so, you have a meeting that deals with health and safety issues. It doesn’t matter exactly how often you do it, as long as you do it regularly. In some workplaces, you have to deal with issues of safety almost every week. In other workplaces, once every other month is probably good enough. The most important thing is to schedule it and post it and allow other workers to voice their concerns at the meeting. That way, you can start to develop a culture of workplace health & safety.

Most importantly, make sure that you post health and safety rules around the workplace. Whether you train your workers once or you train them a hundred times, someone will forget the guidelines at some point. Rather than berating your workers for being forgetful, make sure that they always have access to the guidelines. Put them in a place where everyone can see them and periodically quiz workers on them. Everyone should know the rules, whether it is food safety or proper maintenance and operation of machines. It could save a life.

Health And Diet

The nutritional requirements for the baby will rely
soley on the breast milk, and therefore the mother will
need to maintain a healthy diet. If the baby is
large and grows fast, the fat stores gained by the
mother during pregnancy can be depleted quickly,
meaning that she may have trouble eating good enough
to maintain and develop sufficient amounts of milk.

This type of diet normally involves a high calorie,
high nutrition diet which follows on from that in
pregnancy. Even though mothers in famine conditions
can produce milk with nutritional content, a mother
that is malnourished may produce milk with lacking
levels of vitamins A, D, B6, and B12.

If they smoke, breast feeding mothers must use
extreme caution. More than 20 cigarettes a day has
been shown to reduce the milk supply and cause vomiting,
diarrhoea, rapid heart rate, and restlessness in
the infants. SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) is
more common in babies that are exposed to smoke.

Heavy drinking is also known to harm the imfant, as
well as yourself. If you are breast feeding, you
should avoid alcohol or consume very small amounts at
a time.

The excessive consumption of alcohol by the mother can
result in irritability, sleeplessness, and increased
feeding in the infant. Moderate use, normally 1 – 2
cups a day normally produces no effect. Therefore,
mothers that are breast feeding are advised to avoid
caffeine or restrict intake of it.

By following a healthy diet and limiting your intake
of the above, you’ll ensure that your baby gets the
right nutrients during your time of breast feeding.
This stage of life is very important – as you don’t
want anything to happen to your baby.

Health risks of mobile phones

Using a mobile phone for more than 10 years increases the risk of getting brain cancer, according to the most comprehensive study of the risks yet published.

The study which contradicts official pronouncements that there is no danger of getting the disease found that people who have had the phones for a decade or more are twice as likely to get a malignant tumour on the side of the brain where they hold the handset.

The studies confirm that cell and cordless phone microwave can:
Damage nerves in the scalp
Cause blood cells to leak hemoglobin
Cause memory loss and mental confusion
Cause headaches and induce extreme fatigue
Create joint pain, muscle spasms and tremors
Create burning sensation and rash on the skin
Alter the brain’s electrical activity during sleep
Induce ringing ! in the ears, impair sense of smell
Precipitate cataracts, retina damage and eye cancer
Open the blood-brain barrier to viruses and toxins
Reduce the number and efficiency of white blood cells
Stimulate asthma by producing histamine in mast cells
Cause digestive problems and raise bad cholesterol levels
Stress the endocrine system, especially pancreas, thyroid, ovaries, testes.

The scientists who conducted the research say using a mobile for just an hour every working day during that period is enough to increase the risk and that the international standard used to protect users from the radiation emitted is not safe and needs to be revised.
They conclude that caution is needed in the use of mobile phones and believe children, who are especially vulnerable, should be discouraged from using them at all.
Cancers take at least 10 years and normally much longer to develop but, as mobile phones have spread so recently and rapidly, relatively few people have been using them that long.
Official assurances that the phones are safe have been based on research that has, at best, included only a few people who have been exposed to the radiation for long enough to get the disease, and are therefore of little or no value in assessing the real risk.

The new study headed by two Swedes, Professor Lennart Hardell of the University Hospital in Orebro and Professor Kjell Hansson Mild of Umea University, who also serves on the MTHR programme’s management committee goes some way to meeting the deficiency.

The scientists pulled together the results of the 11 studies that have so far investigated the occurrence of tumours in people who have used phones for more than a decade, drawing on research in Sweden, Denmark Finland, Japan, Germany, the United States and Britain. They found almost all had discovered an increased risk, especially on the side of the head where people listened to their handsets.
Five of the six studies of malignant gliomas, cancers of the glial cells that support and protect the nerve cells, found an increased risk. The only one that did not still found an increase in benign gliomas. Four of the five studies that looked at acoustic neuromas benign but often disabling tumours on the auditory nerve, which usually cause deafness found them. The exception was based on only two cases of the disease, but still found that long-term users had larger tumours than other people.
The scientists assembled the findings of all the studies to analyse them collectively. This revealed that people who have used their phones for a decade or more are 20 per cent more likely to contract acoustic neuromas, and 30 per cent more likely to get malignant gliomas.
The risk is even greater on the side of the head the handset is used: long-term users were twice as likely to get the gliomas, and two and a half times more likely to get the acoustic neuromas there than other people.

The scientists conclude: Results from present studies on use of mobile phones for more than 10 years give a consistent pattern of an increased risk for acoustic neuroma and glioma. They add that “an increased risk for other types of brain tumours cannot be ruled out.
Professors Hardell and Mild have also themselves carried out some of the most extensive original work into tumours among long-term mobile phone users and have come up with even more alarming results. Their research suggests they are more than three times more likely to get malignant gliomas than other people, and nearly five times more likely to get them on the side of the head where they held the phone. For acoustic neuromas they found a threefold and three-and-a-half-fold increased risk respectively.
They have also carried out the only study into the effects of the long-term use of cordless phones, and found this also increased both kinds of tumours. Their research suggests that using a mobile or cordless phone for just 2,000 hours less than an hour every working day for 10 years is enough to augment the risk.

Professor Mild told The Independent on Sunday: I find it quite strange to see so many official presentations saying that there is no risk. There are strong indications that something happens after 10 years. He stressed that brain cancers are rare: they account for less than 2 per cent of primary tumours in Britain, though they are disproportionately deadly, causing 7 per cent of the years of life lost to the disease. Every cancer is one too many, he said.

He said he uses a mobile phone as little as possible, and urges others to use hands-free equipment and make only short calls, reserving longer ones for landlines. He also said that mobiles should not be given to children, whose thinner skulls and developing nervous systems make them particularly vulnerable.
The danger may be even greater than the new study suggests for, as Professor Mild says, 10 years is the minimum period needed by cancers to develop. As they normally take much longer, very many more would be likely to strike long-term users after 15, 20 or 30 years which leads some to fear that an epidemic of the disease could develop in the coming decades, particularly among today’s young people.
On the other hand, the professor points out that the amount of radiation emitted by phones has decreased greatly since the first ones came on the market more than a decade ago, which suggests that exposures and risks should also be falling. But he still recommended choosing phones that give out as little radiation as possible (see below), and pointed out that people are now also exposed to many other sources of radiation, such as masts and Wi-Fi systems, though these emit much less than mobile handsets.
Britain’s official Health Protection Agency which has taken a cautious view of claims that radiation from mobile phones, their masts and Wi-Fi installations can damage health admits that the study may be indicative of a risk, but says that “such analyses cannot be conclusive.
The Mobile Operators Association said: This is not new data for the World Health Organisation and the many independent expert scientific committees who state that there are no established health risks from using mobile phones that comply with international guidelines.
Both sides agree that there is need for more research. Professor Mild said a possible link between mobile phones and Alzheimer’s disease should also be examined, since we have indications that it might be a problem as well as a possible link with Parkinson’s disease, which can’t be ruled out.
In the meantime, the scientists want a revision of the emission standard for mobiles and other sources of radiation, which they describe as inappropriate and not safe. The international standard is designed merely to prevent harmful heating of living tissue or induced electrical currents in the body and does not take the risk of getting cancer into account.
Professors Hansen and Mild serve on the international BioInitiative Working Group of leading scientists and public health experts, which this summer produced a report warning that the standard was thousands of times too lenient.
The BioInitiative report added: It has been established beyond reasonable doubt that some adverse health effects occur at far lower levels of exposure some at several thousand times below the existing safety limits. It also warned that unless this is corrected there could be “public health problems of a global nature.

Case study: ‘Mobiles are the smoking of the 21st century; they need health warnings’
Neil Whitfield, a 49-year-old father of six, developed an acoustic neuroma in 2001 after years of heavy mobile phone use, on the left side of the head, to which he had held his handset. He says he had no family history of the disease and that when he asked a specialist what had caused it, the doctor had asked him if he used a mobile.

I was on it four hours a day, easily he says. When I held it to my head, I could feel my ear getting warm.
He adds that he completely lost his hearing in his left ear and was off work for 12 months. Unable to go back to his old job in marketing, he became a teacher, suffering a Ł20,000 drop in income.
It has had a devastating effect on my family, he says. Mobile phones are the smoking of the 21st century; they should have health warnings on them. You would never buy a child a pack of cigarettes, but we give them mobiles which could cause them harm.

Warning: your model might be dangerous

Exposure to radiation, shown as Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) levels, varies widely in different models. Manufacturers and the Government have ignored the Stewart report that urges they be clearly marked on phones and boxes. They are thus hard to find, though the Carphone Warehouse catalogue includes them. An easily accessible list of phones and radiation exposures is published in Germany, where low-radiation models, defined as having SAR of 0.6 or under, are encouraged.

Health Tips For Your Baby

There are always concerns about a baby’s health. Many parents overreact to the smallest problem, but you really can’t be too careful when it comes to your baby’s health. Recognizing the symptoms to the most common diseases is very important to early diagnosis and treatment.

Rubella or German Measles: It’s sometimes referred to as the 3-day measles as well. It affects the skin and lymph nodes. It’s not the same virus that cause measles. It can pass through a pregnant woman’s bloodstream to infect her unborn baby.

Rubella infection may begin with 1 or 2 days of mild fever (99 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit, or 37.2 to 37.8 degrees Celsius) and swollen, tender lymph nodes, usually in the back of the neck or behind the baby’s ears. On the second or third day, a rash appears that begins on the baby’s face and spreads downward. As it spreads down the body, it usually clears on the face. This rash is often the first sign of illness that a parent notices.

The rubella rash can look like many other viral rashes. It appears as either pink or light red spots, which may merge to form evenly colored patches. The rash can itch and lasts up to 3 days. As the rash passes, the affected skin occasionally sheds in very fine flakes.

Its importance is the potential effects on an unborn baby if infection is acquired during early pregnancy.
The introduction of the MMR vaccine has reduced the incidence of primary rubella infection, and the number of severely affected unborn babies. The incubation period is 14-21 days, fever is often mild, and children do not feel particularly unwell, unlike measles infection. Woman who may be pregnant should not come into contact with infected children.

Chickenpox: occurs most often in the late winter and early spring, is very contagious and if exposed to an infected family member, about 80% to 90% of those in a household who haven’t had chickenpox will get it. However, immunization of children with the chickenpox vaccine that’s now available is expected to decrease cases of the disease dramatically over the next few years.

Although it’s more common in kids under the age of 15, anyone, including babies, can get chickenpox. A person usually has only one episode of chickenpox in his or her lifetime. But the virus that causes chickenpox can lie dormant within the body and can cause a different type of skin eruption later in life called shingles, also referred to as herpes-zoster.

It’s usually a mild illness in children. The incubation period is 14-16 days, and there are often no symptoms other than the rash. The rash generally only lasts 8-10 days. Some children develop a mild fever in the first 2-3 days. The spots appear in crops, first as small bumps, and rapidly changing into little blisters. The blisters soon dry and crust, and scabs form over the top. Keep your child from scratching them or it could lead to scarring. Calamine creams are useful to help relieve any itching from the spots.

Roseola Infantum: Affects babies under two. The baby will have a high fever, but appear well otherwise, and 3 or 4 days later the temperature will rapidly drop to normal. At this time, after the fever has gone, a faint rash appears which only lasts 1 or 2 days at most. There are no complications.

Coughs and Colds:
Most children will have at least six respiratory infections each year. These are almost always mild, last only a few days and have no consequences. Children will simply get a blocked, runny nose, may have a mild fever and feel slightly unwell. In young babies (who are nose breathers) feeding can become difficult for a couple of days. Children should be treated with Paracetamol or Ibuprofen if they have a fever, and may be helped by nasal decongestants. There is rarely a need for antibiotics. Occasionally coughing, especially at night times can be the main symptom of asthma, and children with persistent nocturnal coughs should see a doctor.
Sore Throat, Pharingitis and Tonsillitis: Very common between the ages of 4-7 years old. Symptoms include pain while swallowing and eating, earache, and fever. Giving them soft food to eat and lots of fluids. Children should see a doctor if they have a fever too. Pharyngitis is caused by viruses and so will not always require antibiotic treatment. Tonsillectomies are rarely performed now.

Earache: Very common in children and babies. It can be associated or caused by chest infections, colds and coughs. Sometimes there is no infection in the ear, pain is due to the Eustachian Tube being blocked. When blocked it doesn’t maintain the correct pressure in the ear.

Where there is a true infection, Otits Media, or Middle Ear Infection, the eardrum becomes red and inflamed and can cause the baby to have a fever. Babies may become irritable or hold their hands over their ears. If you suspect your baby has an ear infection, you should see a doctor.

Vomiting and Diarrhea: Very common, especially if you take your baby on travels to foreign countries. In the US and other developed nations, vomiting and diarrhea are commonly caused by viral infections. and Diarrhea will often be watery. It may be difficult to distinguish from urine in a nappy.

Your baby or child will usually only be sick a very short time. It is important to treat them right away to avoid your baby becoming dehydrated. Younger babies are more vulnerable than older children.

Dehydration initially causes children to become fretful, then lethargic, with sunken eyes and lax dry skin. Severe dehydration causes young children to become prostrate with deeply sunken eyes and cold mottled skin. Mild dehydration can be treated at home. Children should be given oral rehydration fluids, which can be bought at your local Pharmacy.

These are powders containing salts and sugar and which are dissolved in water. They allow prompt reversal of dehydration, and are more effective than water alone. No food should be given for 24 hours, after which time the normal diet can be gradually restarted. Moderate to severe dehydration requires hospitalization for intravenous fluid therapy. In tropical countries, adding salt to coca cola also acts meningitis is usually mild, and rarely causes any long term problems.

Sticky Eyes: Very common in young babies. Usually there is no underlying infection, and simple salt-water washes are sufficient. Cotton wool soaked in saline should be used 2-3 times per day. The problem goes away in a few days, but can be recurring.

Conjunctivitis in babies is caused by infections, which do require antibiotic treatment. The eye will usually be red and inflamed with pus, rather than simply sticky with yellow secretions. In this case you should see your doctor so the eye can be swabbed and appropriate antibiotics started.

Fever: All children get fevers and it’s usually caused by common viruses such as ‘flu, spotty illnesses like measles or ear and chest infections. Children feel uncomfortable when they get hot, often cry, need comforting and lose their appetite. They should be given Paracetamol- based elixirs (Calpol in England) or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory pediatric elixirs like Ibuprofen to lower the temperature.

Keep your baby cool with damp tepid, not cold, sponges. Aspirin should not be used for children. You should not exceed the recommended daily dose of any medication. Most causes of fever will resolve within 2-3 days. You should see your doctor in case your baby requires antibiotics where an infection is present, but this is not usually an emergency. However, if your child becomes drowsy, complains of headaches or neck stiffness, is intolerant of light or develops a blotchy dark rash, or multiple small spots, you should call your doctor immediately.

Convulsions: Occasionally babies between three months and five years will have a Febrile Convulsion, a brief fit with jerky movements of arms and legs, lasting less than ten minutes, and generally occurs at the beginning of febrile illnesses. Febrile convulsions are not epilepsy, do not continue through childhood, and do not cause or imply any sort of brain damage. Children should be laid on their front and their necks extended, cooled and treated with appropriate antibiotics. A rash can also be associated with febrile illnesses.

Mumps: A common viral infection, often with no symptoms at all. The incubation period is 16-21 days, after which children become febrile and feel unwell and lethargic. At this stage the baby’s face may swell up, due to enlargement of the parotid salivary glands over the angle of the jaw, just below the ears. Older children may complain of earache and difficulty in swallowing, and the swollen glands are often tender and painful. There is no specific treatment, and the swelling subsides in a few days. The MMR vaccine has reduced the incidence of mumps infection. Meningitis is a common complication, in which the child has headache, a stiff neck and intolerance of light, but is a very rare occurrence.

Measles: Much less common since the introduction of the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine in the UK and US. Measles is a very infectious disease. The incubation period is around 10 days, after which time children become febrile, snuffly, may cough, and may develop Conjunctivitis (red eyes). After three or four days a florid reddish rash appears, starting on the face and head, then spreading down to cover your baby’s whole body. The rash can become blotchy. It begins to fade by the 4th day, and the baby gradually improves. Paracetamol preparations (Calpol in the UK) can help reduce the fever, and relieve many of the symptoms. There is no specific treatment. Pneumonia and ear infections are common complications, which should be treated promptly. Children who become drowsy, start vomiting or complain of headache should be taken to a doctor, as encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) is a rare but well recognized complication of measles occurring 7-10 days after the onset of the illness.

Health Tips During Plane Travel

It is a known fact that long traveling is usually stressful and tedious. Having a stressful trip should not be a part of your travel planning. When you travel in an economy or coach section in a plane for a longer period, it can be stressful and can cause harm to your health. You definitely tend to feel fatigue and experience all kinds of symptoms like vomiting, headache, body pain, desperation for water and uneasiness. So here are few tips to make yourself comfortable during your travel.

1. Drink lots of water and don’t let yourself get dehydrated. You can also consume alcohol moderately.

2. You can wear ear plugs and also eye shades to prevent yourself from hearing any noise and also coming in contact with bright luminous lights.

3.Have a light meal and avoid junk foods. Take fruits, cheese and crackers in between your meals to have a filled feeling.

4. Ensure that you refill your water bottle frequently to consume enough water to fulfill your thirst.

5. Take extra care for your neck and back. Sitting in the plane for too long can cause neck and back pain. Ensure you have an additional pillow or cushion apart from the one given to you in the plane.

6.Moisturize your lips with a lip balm.

7.Prevent your skin from drying up by applying enough moisturizer to your hands and face.

8. Don’t be sitting in the plane. Just have a small walk occasionally to have a good blood circulation.

9. Dress warm because the temperature of the cabin is usually set to 22 to 24 degrees Celsius.

10. Don’t remove your makeup before taking rest since it will prevent your skin from losing moisture in the flight.

11. Yawn frequently or chew your gum or swallow your saliva to depressurize your ears.

12. Don’t drink coffee before and during your flight.

13. Ensure that you have plenty of greens and carbohydrates before boarding the flight and see to it that you take a deep breath before boarding it.
14.Wear comfortable shoes and loose clothes. Make sure for every time zone you cross, you take rest which in turn will reset your body’s condition and allow it to adjust to the new environment.

15. Have a small medicine kit with your medical records and insurance in case of any emergency a balanced diet and have a routine to keep healthy at all times.

Health Supplements

The Food and Drug Administration understands that people may not eat properly. That is why they have listed recommendations for consumers about health supplements – and specifically those with antioxidant properties. The simple fact is the human body cannot work properly without antioxidants. The FDA acknowledges that a lack of antioxidants in a person’s diet is detrimental to their health. They also recognize that health supplements are coming to the aid of many people.

Most people — even those who eat healthy — do not consume the proper amounts of vitamins and minerals they need on a daily basis. When the human body lacks the proper nutrients that include antioxidants (foods that contain vitamins C and E, along with beta-carotene and selenium) the immune system is not as strong as it should be. This means that common illnesses and even serious diseases can arise.

Antioxidants are a protection from free radicals. Free radicals should be thought of as dangerous, deformed enemies who are out to hurt us. Actually, free radicals are mutated oxygen molecules. They are “mutated” by pollution, sun and other hazards. When free radicals are allowed to run free inside the human body, they will attach to cell walls and start to change the cell. Changes in the cells can bring on early aging and even cancer.

Health supplements, such as Resveracine, are the soldiers that guard us against the outside, enemy forces. Resveracine is a combination of super nutrients. This “super hero” is specially formulated to provide the human body with the highest level of free radical scavenger hunters in the world today.

It should be noted that nothing will ever take the place of whole foods. However, the simple fact remains that in today’s world of processed foods, adding a health supplement such as Resveracine to your diet is the only sure way to ensure that you have a ready supply of antioxidants available to fight off disease and signs of early aging.

Only in recent years has the importance of antioxidants been relayed to the general lay person. Education by cancer and disease organizations has prompted many to purchase health supplements for themselves and their families. People are coming to understand that if they take in enough antioxidant though healthy eating and health supplements, their bodies will have a strong defense system in place.

The fact that antioxidants slow down the aging process is the added benefit. Doesn’t it just make sense to make sure you are getting all of the nutrients you need?

Health Spas

Health spas are places where you can go to get a range of health treatments, intended to relax you and relieve stress. They are a modern phenomenon, and are often seen as a product of our high-stress lifestyles, with busy professionals paying large sums of money just to get away from it all for a few hours. However, that isn’t to say that spas can’t be very nice places to go, because they are.

There are lots of different kinds of spas: day spas (where you just drop in when you have an appointment) and resort spas (where you stay like in a hotel) are the most common, with others including spas on cruise ships and medical spas run by doctors.

Most spas offer a wide range of services, with some of the most common and popular being facials, saunas, massages, and various skin and body treatments. Some spas are devoted to a particular aspect of health, such as weight loss or the treatment of back pains.

When you choose a spa, you should make sure that you speak to other customers who have been there before. In common with much of the health industry, many spas can be somewhat disreputable, charging large amounts to stay and further large amounts for each treatment you take. Some spas take deceptive pricing a very long way, and will threaten you with legal action if you don’t pay. This isn’t to scare you away from health spas altogether, but simply to warn you to make sure to stick to ones that have a good reputation, where you know what you’re getting for your money.

If you don’t want to go to a full-blown health spa, though, there are plenty of alternatives. Most of the treatments offered at a health spa are offered by individual practitioners separately, and they are often better at what they do than the staff at a spa. Failing that, beauty salons can also be good places to go for many treatments.

Health Solutions with Ashwagandha

Also known as Winter Cherry and Indian Ginseng, Ashwagandha is one of the most valuable herbs in the Ayurvedic medical system, dating back more than 3,000 years. Its Sanskrit name Ashwagandha literally means ‘that which has the smell of a horse’, so named because it is said to give the strength and vitality of a horse. Ashwagandha is specific for a wide range of conditions including arthritic inflammation, anxiety, insomnia, respiratory disorders, nervous disorders, gynecological disorders, male infertility and impotence.
It is a herb that enhances resistance to stress, increases stamina and promotes general well-being. Many Western herbalists refer to this herb as “Ayurvedic ginseng” because of its reputation for increasing energy, strength, and stamina, and for its ability to relieve stress. Modern research has found several types of alkaloids in it of which somniferin and withaniol are responsible for its multiple actions. The roots of the plant have been reported to have Alkaloids, Withanolides and many Glycosides.

According to the Ayurvedic system, Ashwagandha is the best herb for balancing Vata in the body. Vata governs all movement in the body, including the movement of nerve impulses throughout the nervous system. When the root is taken as a milk decoction and sweetened with honey or raw sugar, it is used to inhibit ageing and build up strength by catalysing the anabolic processes in the body.

Ashwagandha is also a proven immune-modulator, antioxidant and hormone precursor which tends to regulate important physiological functions. Research has shown that it can protect the activity of immune cells that are exposed to chemicals that would otherwise inhibit their normal function.

The antitumor activity of Withania somnifera is known and that it also enhances the effects of radiation in chemotherapy

Ashwagandha for Sexual Debility: Ashwagandha has an affinity for the reproductive system in both men and women. It is the main rejuvenative of masculine energy used in Ayurveda, improving the quality of reproductive tissues and increasing sexual potency. It has also been used to increase libido and potency, for it is said to bestow upon its user the vitality and strength of a horse. It is often added in herbal supplements that are reputed to improve sexual desire and function. Ashwagandha has also been helping women boost their desire for sex. Long considered India’s most potent sex-enhancing plant, the country’s women have used Ashwagandha for years to rev up their sex drives

Ashwagandha For Stress: Ashwagandha is considered as one of the best remedies for stress. While most adaptogens primarily work by helping the body to mobilize and maintain the physiological response to stress, Ashwagandha appears to work first and foremost by reducing the stress-related excesses of the alarmed nervous system. It improves the body’s ability to maintain physical effort and helps the body adapt to various types of stress. It has also been reported to enhance mental function and memory. It acts to calm the mind and promote sound, restful sleep.

Ashwagandha as a Anti-Inflammatory Agent: Ashwagandha is an adaptogen that contains several active phytochemicals known as glycowithanolides, which research has shown may relax smooth muscles. As a natural anti-inflammatory agent, ashwagandha may help to reduce the discomfort associated with arthritis. Forty-two patients with osteoarthritis were randomly placed in two groups–one receiving ashwagandha, one a placebo. After three months, pain and disability were markedly reduced in the ashwagandha group.

Ashwagandha for Weak Memory: Ashwagandha is a medhya rasayana, helping to enhance mental ability and performance. It helps support memory and problem-solving skills and enhances the coordinated functioning of all aspects of the brain. It corrects loss of memory arising out of long term stress, illness and overwork. A 2001 study in rodents showed ashwagandha had memory boosting ability.

Ashwagandha is also used for High Blood Pressure, as an Immune-Modulator and an AntiOxidant.

Overall Ashwagandha is a promising herb in many different fields.

Control of Your Healthcare

As Health Savings Accounts grow in popularity, there is growing fear among those who want to nationalize healthcare that they will not be able to put the cat back in the bag. There are already over 3 million HSA owners, and by 2010, the Treasury Department estimates as many as 45 million Americans will be covered by HSA plans. They will have billions of dollars invested to cover future medical expenses, and by then it will be politically impossible to take that benefit away.

If you currently have a high-deductible health insurance plan, you can invest tax-free money in a Health Savings Account. You get to choose the type of investment – anything from savings accounts or money market funds, to a full brokerage house. If you invest wisely, you could have well over $500,000 in the account when you retire. You will be able to use that money to pay for your healthcare in whatever way you please, tax free. You can go to the best surgeons, or the least expensive doc-in-a-box. If you decide to treat a condition with acupuncture, homeopathy, or psychic healers, you can do that too. Whoever offers you the service you want with the best combination of quality and price should get your business. And since you are the one paying, it will be completely your choice. You have healthcare freedom.

If proponents of a single-payer system were to ever have their way, you would be at the mercy of a government bureaucrat when it comes to your healthcare. To see what this may look like, all one has to do is look at the state of health care in Canada, England, New Zealand, and the parts of Europe that have not yet abandoned single-payer systems.

Proponents of a single-payer system tend to point to Canada or England as countries that cover all their citizens with quality healthcare, while spending less money per person than the U.S. But if we look a little more closely, we see that these publicly financed health insurance systems are breaking down, the quality is low, and the costs can be quite high. Here’s what Canadians have to deal with if they need medical care:

• Long waits. Hundreds of Canadians go to Detroit and other U.S. cities every year for procedures like CAT scans, which they can obtain treatment in a matter of days. In Canada, the wait is typically six months. Currently 876,000 Canadians are on waiting lists for medical procedures.

• Difficulty in getting life-enhancing procedures done. If a Canadian is having a heart attack, they will be treated right then. But if the surgery is considered “elective” (meaning that possible death is not eminent), the wait could be months or years. Average wait for cataract removal is 18 months. Average wait for a knee replacement is one year.

• Increased risk of dieing. The average Canadian waits eight weeks to see a specialist, and another nine weeks before getting treated. This is even the case with conditions that are likely to get much worse if there is any delay in treatment. For example, the median time for a mastectomy is 14 weeks, enough time for the cancer to spread to other parts of the body. In fact, 28% of those diagnosed with breast cancer in Canada die from it, while the mortality ratio in the U.S. is only 25%.

Things don’t look any better across the ocean. Each year the British National Health Service cancels 410,000 surgeries because of resource shortages. According to the London Sunday Times, there are currently over 1 million Brits awaiting elective surgery. Thomas Cook, a British travel agency, is even considering offering “sun-and-surgery” packaged trips to Indian hospitals for British citizens fed up with low standards and long waiting times for surgery.

The British and Canadian governments have the power to make healthcare “free”, but they are unable to control its costs. So the costs become longer (and potentially fatal) delays, and fewer innovations.

Its not surprising when you think about what is happening. Universal health insurance systems always encourage over-consumption by patients, and such over-consumption always leads to financial crises. The result is inevitably broken promises about universal access and quality care. Because there are always limited resources, single-payer systems tend to overspend on primary care for the healthy, while denying more expensive specialist care to those with serious medical problems. This is because most people (voters) are healthy most of the time, and the sick and dieing are less likely to be able to organize into a political force.

What makes the United States such a great country is the “freedoms” we enjoy. Though our freedoms seem to be constantly under attack, there is still no nation in the world that has the freedom of the press, freedom of religion, freedom of association, or the free markets that we have in the United States. As anyone who understands even a smidgen of economics knows, free markets encourage competition and innovation, which lead to lower prices and better quality.

Though the U.S. system of health care can not really be considered a “free-market”, it is certainly much more free than any single payer system. Some of the benefits we see as a result of our current healthcare system include:

• U.S. medicine produces the best outcomes for virtually every patient, from premature babies to elderly cancer patients.
• American companies are the chief source worldwide of new treatments and procedures which each year are used to save millions of lives.
• U.S. medical training and research facilities are the best in the world.

Though Canadians might have to wait a year or two for hip replacement surgery, they can get the same operation done on their dog in less than a week. This is because veterinarians are competing for that business, finding innovative ways to deliver service more quickly and less expensively. Another example is laser eye surgery, a procedure that is rarely covered by insurance, so laser eye surgeons must compete on the basis of cost and quality. While costs for most medical procedures have been going up every year, the cost for this procedure has dropped by 80% over the past decade.

Unfortunately, U.S. healthcare policies still tend to limit competition, restrict consumer’s freedom to choose, and discourage consumers from shopping for value. Thus, there are too few choices and there has been little attention paid to price and quality of service. The answer is clearly not more government intervention, but instead letting competition and the power of the marketplace drive down prices and increase quality and access to care.

Health Savings Accounts are the Solution

There is increasing recognition that third-party health insurance payers are actually a major cause of escalating medical costs and the decline in the quality of service. The increasing adoption of HSA plans has already begun to cause greater transparency and competition in the medical marketplace. There are now physicians available by phone, medical kiosks setting up in malls, doctors that accept only cash (and who charge significantly less), and others competing directly for the consumer’s healthcare dollar.

Don’t be fooled by the politicians who advocate a single-payer system, claiming their only concern is the uninsured. If a single body (such as a government bureaucracy) controls healthcare, they control one seventh of the national economy. And everywhere in the world that central control of the economy has been tried, it has been a colossal failure.

As public policy reforms centered on individual choice continue to gain wider footholds, the result will be greater prosperity, greater choice, and a better value for all. The culture of dependence and entitlement will begin to fade, as millions of individuals demand further policy reforms that will reinstate the values of freedom and personal responsibility that helped establish this great nation.

As more consumers turn to health savings accounts, the market will respond. Innovative providers will begin to compete more on price and quality of service, and those that provide the best value will get wealthy doing so. And all consumers will benefit.

Health Related Articles Online

Over the last few years a number of article directory type websites have been created which have a mass of information about a variety of subjects. These subjects vary from web promotion and web design, travel, business as well as many more topics. The area that is of most interest to myself is health and I enjoy reading about other peoples experiences to similar problems that I also suffer from.

As well as reading about different writers experiences about things like speech impediments, many of these articles offer advice on how we can possibly solve these health problems. Where as in the past I would possibly go to the doctors or to the library, I now always find myself looking firstly on these article websites hoping to find some solutions.

I have even wrote a number of articles about health related matters which I hope other readers will find beneficial. So far I have had quite a few e-mails from people from many different countries who have stated that they have enjoyed reading my articles. The internet seems to have a way of making the world seem a smaller place in this way.

If you have an issue with your health, I would certainly recommend that you take a read of some of these articles as some of the authors write in a very easy to read and interesting manner. I have to say however that there is also quite a lot of poor articles on some of these article directories but you are always going to get that I suppose, especially with the directories who do not check each article before accepting them.

There are a number of good quality article directories which I would recommend you start with such as ezinearticles, goarticles, articlealley, searchwarp and articledashboard. These are what are widely regarded by many people as the best of the article websites and are more likely to have weeded out the poorer type of articles.

I now feel that after reading so many articles about constipation that I am some sort of expert in this field. Going back to being serious again, there are so many health related subjects that have had articles written about them that I am confident that you will be able to find some useful information this way.

I hope you enjoy reading these articles as much as I have done and also hope that they are of benefit to you in finding solutions to your own health problems.
